In this episode of Literature on the Rocks…
we’re diving into First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston and right out of the gate, things get delightfully unhinged. Before we even crack the spine, we somehow end up discovering that Rox owns different socks for inside the house versus going out, which naturally spirals into the birth of a future children’s book starring Raincloud Rox and her emotionally expressive footwear. Truly, give it a listen because it is RIVETING.
Once we lock in, though, this story had us fully seated. First Lie Wins is a slick, twisty thriller that keeps you guessing with every new reveal. We break down Evie’s carefully constructed identities, the layered lies that keep stacking higher, and the constant tension of not knowing who—or what—to trust. Every chapter felt like a step deeper into a game where the rules keep changing, and we loved being along for the ride.
Evie is the kind of female main character we can’t get enough of: smart, capable, and always ten steps ahead (even when things go sideways). Watching her navigate deception, danger, and survival kept us on our toes, and by the end, it was clear why this landed as one of our top rated books of 2025. If you like thrillers that reward close attention and refuse to play nice, this one delivers.
Of course, we needed a cocktail that matched the vibes—something pretty, deceptive, and just a little dangerous.
Sweet Alibi Recipe
Ingredients:
1 ½ oz vodka (clean, untraceable… like Evie)
½ oz Aperol (for a misleading hint of bitterness)
½ oz elderflower liqueur (deceptively floral)
½ oz lemon juice
1 oz white grape juice (adds sweetness and a hint of mystery)
Club soda to top
Edible glitter
Directions:
In a shaker with ice, combine vodka, Aperol, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and white grape juice. Shake like you’re trying to lose a tail. Strain into a highball glass over fresh ice. Top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with raspberries or a twist of lemon—something that looks sweet and harmless.
